The 2009 Prize Giving Day was held on 26th September and was as beaut as ever, being the biggest event in Strathmore’s annual calendar. The event started at 2:05pm and was opened by a prayer by the School Chaplain, Father Joe Babendreier. A number of rattling entertainment pieces from both the primary and secondary sections followed. The prizes presented were many and as varied as ever. The guests of honor for this year were Prof. and Mrs. Jama, Parents of Sharmaarke Jama (Form 4 2009) and Libaan Jama (Standard 3 2009).
The Primary band, featuring the Lower Primary, began the programme. Under the guidance of instructors form Trinit Music School and dedicating countless number of hours in the mastery of music instruments, they stole the hearts of the crowd with the song
‘What goes around’.

Allan Mungai, who topped the Plain Instruments Category in this year’s talent show, proved yet again a master of his skill with a
dum-diri-dum-a-drum on the drum set, leaving the crowd cheering for more, but the show had to go on.

The Std 4 boys built 4 box towers, one for each team. When building a tower, gravity is the deepest handicap. Its rules are fixed and it does not forgive mistakes. The four teams ran for the boxes and brought them to the site where they competed to build up the towers. The team with the highest tower won. It was, I suppose, a tug-o-war between patience and speed.
Earlier on in the year, a number of parents and friends joined us for two exceptional concerts. The first held in late August, was a concert by a group of guitar-crazy Form 1s… The second – in early September – was by the singing-crazy Form twos going by the name 15. From their two hour show, they picked their favorite three songs to present,
Wakariru, Safari Ya Bamba and
Kisumu Ber. And with the stewardship of an ex-form 4 student,
Andrew Tumbo (F.4 2006), they did not disappoint to say the least.
Next we had the Standard 1s with
Teamwork. The boys had to run for boxes placed at the corner, bring them to the construction site and construct a team logo and part of the school motto. It was a true test of leadership, teamwork, communication, speed and attention to instructions and detail.

Christopher Gichuki and Nicholas Mosoba(Form 2s), presented a masterpiece shairi “
Fahari ya Shule” drafted by the two secondary Swahili Department teachers, Mr. Alfred Odisa and Mr. Dominic Ngila. The same shairi had gone on to win the miscellaneous Skills category on Talent show held earlier on in the year.
The Std. 3 pupils then presented a skiing game, popular during family sports among the parents. The picture speaks for itself. You can only imagine what transpired on the stage.

A tapestry of many things close to a Form 3’s soul, this piece managed to cast a spell on the judges of the Talent Show and conjure up a grand total of 90% in their score-sheet. Music, adrenaline, company, space, rugby, humour, dance, challenge, fear, teamwork, travel, variety… one way or another, these fine threads were all twirled and twined into the dramatic tapestry…
THE HAKA.

The standard twos had ‘tug of war’ with their fathers, as per tradition on every Prize Giving day! In this game the boys and fathers demonstrated the father son bond by working together. Though they pull in opposite directions, it is clear that their unity is strength. And guess what…the small boys won…again!

Strathmore believes in the development of an all round character. That is why we also go ahead to honour these students after carefully considering not only their academic prowess, but also their conduct and service to others by awarding them the beautiful Strathmore Pennants.
(In the primary, only 3 pennants were awarded to the best students per class. In the secondary, 5 such pennants are awarded per class, along with the certificates of outstanding academic performance. This is due to the fact that the secondary section has a double stream.)
