Celebrating Professor David Sperling at 90

On 19th June 2025, the Strathmore School came together in gratitude and admiration to celebrate the 90th birthday of Professor David Sperling, the founding Principal of Strathmore College and a man whose vision, courage, and values laid the foundation for one of Kenya’s most respected educational institutions.

A Pioneer in Education

Professor Sperling’s story is one of bold vision and deep purpose. Alongside Kevin O’Byrne, he co-founded Strathmore College in the early 1960s—among the first multi-racial educational institutions in Kenya, established at a time when segregation and racial barriers were still common.

Strathmore boldly welcomed students of all races setting a powerful precedent for values-driven education in Kenya.

Shaping Kenya’s Accountancy and Business Landscape

One of Professor Sperling’s most enduring contributions was the establishment of Strathmore’s School of Accountancy in 1966, at a time when Kenya had fewer than five certified accountants. Despite early resistance, he successfully advocated for the training of professional accountants within an academic setting.

The initiative quickly gained momentum, attracting support from leading regional companies and drawing students from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. It was a major step forward in building local capacity in finance and business at a time when the country was in great need of such expertise.

A Legacy Rooted in Values and Faith

Professor Sperling’s educational leadership was shaped by a profound spiritual vision, influenced by his encounter with Saint Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei. He often described education as a transcendent mission—a calling that goes beyond academics to form character, faith and a sense of higher purpose.

His reflection on freedom as inseparable from truth and on the importance of seeking knowledge in order to love more deeply, continue to guide Strathmore’s ethos to this day. He believed in the dignity of all work and in the ability of ordinary life—done well and with intention—to be a path to holiness.

A Life Worth Celebrating

As we mark 90 years of Professor Sperling’s life, we celebrate more than a birthday—we honour a life of purpose, service and impact. His contributions to education, leadership and spiritual formation have touched thousands and shaped an institution that continues to thrive on the foundations he helped lay.

Happy 90th Birthday, Professor Sperling.
Your legacy lives on in the classrooms, corridors and hearts of all who pass through Strathmore School!
