After about two years of preparation, 32 pupils of standard 3 finally received Holy Communion for the first time on Saturday, 20th May 2017. They had been looking forward to that moment with more and more eagerness as the final preparations were being made. The boys were also glad to receive their first confession that week and many of them were happy to go several more times to prepare themselves. Before the actual day, many of us also witnessed the boys rehearse for the ceremony, moving around the compound in two orderly lines guided by their class teacher Mr. Muiruri. Their effort paid off as their orderly movement helped to make the day a success.

In his homily, the chaplain, Fr. Francis reminded those present that this year is the 100th anniversary of the appearance of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children in Fatima Portugal. He told them that before the 13th of May 1917, the three children received their first communion from the hands of an angel as a preparation for their first meeting with the Mother of Jesus and as a way of preparing them to receive the important message she had for the whole world. Fr. Francis further encouraged the boys to love Jesus in the Eucharist. As a show of their gratitude to Jesus, communicants sang a wonderful song.
The number of boys receiving first Holy Communion this year was the highest in the recent past and for that reason we had a large gathering of relatives and friends coming to witness the great moment. There were several grandparents present and they were clearly joyful at seeing the young ones make a major step in their Christian life. The boys as good hosts shared their joy with them by inviting their guests to a tasty bite of cake and other refreshments. Parents, sisters and brothers also assisted in making the other guests feel at home and making the day a great success.

The Basketball competitions for Westlands Sub County began in January. Strathmore School prepared well for this year’s competitions after they lost narrowly in 2016 to St. Austins School. One of their best performances was at the semi finals where they beat Nairobi School 78-48. They won against Hospital Hill and emerged the champions in Westlands Sub County.

In the preliminaries stage of Westlands Sub Region, Strathmore won all their matches but lost narrowly against Starehe Boys. They met Hospital Hill in the playoffs and emerged victorious.

Strathmore School proceeded to represent Westlands Sub Region in the Regional competitions.  The matches at this level were very competitive both physically and mentally. The team played well and they won against Lenana School but lost to Highway School. This made them emerge position 2 and had to face the most competitive side from the other group that was Upperhill School. They were eliminated at the semi finals but managed position 4 in the entire region. The full scores and photos can be found below.

This event filled with pomp and colour took place on Saturday, 11th March 2017. The venue of the inaugural championship was the indoor arena at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Schools started streaming into the venue as early as 12:00pm for a 2:00pm kick off. A total of 30 schools turned out for the event. These 30 schools will represent the 30 teams that make up the actual NBA tournament in the United States.

Before this day, three coaches, namely Mr. Brian Njoroge, Mr. John Thomas Nyakundi and Mr. Brian Abuto, were taken through rigorous coaching courses at USIU on Thursday and Friday to enlighten them on the tactical, technical and physical facets of the game.

The Under 12 School Team comprising of 13 Standard 6 boys namely James Kiumi, Terema Matiko, Benedict Mbalu, Michira Mbugua, Philip Mugambi, Sean Muiga, Victor Nzoka, Paul Ochieno, Edwin Okwach, Mark Towett and Jeremy Wachira arrived at the venue shortly after 1:00pm.

Lunch was served by 1:30pm. At 2:00pm the speeches were given namely by the US ambassador to Kenya, the Director of Operations of the NBA, a basketballer for the women’s version of the NBA (WNBA) and a representative from Ford Company, Ryan Majiwa, who is an old boy of the School (F4 2003). Ford is sponsoring the Championship.

After the speeches the crowd was entertained by professional dunkers from the United States who left the crowds mesmerized at their athletic prowess.

The event concluded with an exhibition match.

Each of the teams was to be given a kit of one of the 30 NBA teams through a kind of draft selection. Strathmore School selected the Phoenix Suns kit. The team has received 10 training balls.

The Nairobi Region Research Club of Africa (R.C.A) competitions were held on Saturday, 18th March 2017 at State House Girls High School, Nairobi. Strathmore School was represented by 20 students drawn from The Research Club. They were led by their Club Patron Mr. Kerongo.

This year, the theme was “Citizenship” and the Strathmore School sub-theme was “Community Service”. The main objective was “How community service makes a student a good citizen”. It was a good and relevant exercise for a Strathmore student to research on a topic of an activity in which their F2 & F3 students participate during April, August & December holidays. The presenters had SMART objectives and were able to answer good questions from the audience. The presenters were: Kanyua Waweru (F3 Alpha), Sifa Irungu (F3 Alpha), Storm Gachoki (F3 Alpha) and Kalya Tuwei (F1 A). The other schools were the hosts State House Girls, Lenana School, Moi Girls Nairobi, Alliance Boys, Corner Brook from Juja and Makongeni School.

Strathmore School competed well and garnered 70 points out of 100 and emerged position 4 out of the 7 schools that participated in the event.

Congratulations to the Research Club!

On Saturday, 11th March 2017, 23 pupils of the Tae-Kwon-Do club attended the Makini Annual Tae-Kwon-Do tournament led by their Club Patron Mr. Otieno. The tournament helped the participants to practice the skills they have been learning and practicing in the club. This was a good opportunity to compete with pupils from other schools and learn more skills from them. The participants competed very well and the following pupils were awarded medals for their exemplary performance: Silver – Aidan Muiga (Std. 1) and Bronze – Gabriel Mwathi (Std. 4), Charles Abuodha (Std. 2), Jabari Kuria (Std. 3).

Congratulations to the Tae-Kwon-Do club!

On Saturday, 11th March 2017, 60 Form 3 students visited Machakos Secondary School for the Deaf. Mr. Muhia, Mr. Haggai and Mr. Githaiga accompanied them. They began their journey at around 8:45 a.m and reached Machakos at around 11:30 a.m.

The Deputy Principal of Machakos Secondary School for the Deaf welcomed the visitors and went ahead to introduce the members of staff present. The Strathmore group went ahead to introduce themselves and further explained the purpose of their visit. Being a school for the deaf, an interpreter was used.

The students were then divided into two groups. The first group was to engage in peer teaching while other group was to have an inter-school debate.

During peer teaching the students of both schools were divided into smaller groups and worked through a mathematics paper. Any student who didn’t understand a certain concept was encouraged to ask questions so that his peers may help him understand. This was the essence of peer teaching.

It was a unique and enjoyable experience for the Strathmore students. One of the students, David Omondi commented: “It is my first time being in a room where there is so much communication yet no sound is being made.”

The debate motion was “City Life or Village Life. Better which?” It was a face-off kind of debate where a student was to give one point to support their stand before allowing the opposer to counter.  Village Life emerged victorious.

After the peer teaching and debate the Strathmore students were taught simple sign language such as the alphabet, simple family terms like mother and father, food terms like ugali and fish and the signs for various places like Nairobi and Nakuru. The Kenya sign language session ended at 1:30 pm and the students went for lunch.

The students gathered in the main assembly ground at 1:40 pm for the presentation of the items donated by the students.

After a brief photo session, the students boarded the buses at 2:20 pm and began the journey back to school where they arrived in school at around 4:15 pm.
