Checkmate Excellence: Strathmore School Chess Triumphs from Nairobi Regionals to East Africa Games

The Strathmore School chess team completed an extraordinary competitive run, demonstrating exceptional intellect, focus, and tactical mastery across the Nairobi Regionals, the KSSSA National Championships, and the prestigious Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games.


Nairobi Region Chess Championships: Complete Regional Dominance

At the Nairobi Region Chess Championships hosted at Jamhuri High School, Strathmore fielded 12 senior secondary boys across two balanced squads, sweeping both individual and team categories:

  • Individual Category Champion: Kyle Kuka (Grade 10) staged a flawless performance, winning all six rounds to emerge overall regional champion.
  • Top 20 Individual Finishers: Abel Taji Kimani (Grade 10) finished strongly in 6th place overall, while Laris Miriti secured 16th place to ensure three Strathmore players finished in the top 20.
  • Team Category Triumph: Team A—comprising Kyle Kuka, Abel Taji Kimani, Ihabi Osundwa, Justin Kamau, Baraka Wamai, and Laris Miriti—claimed 1st place overall to take the regional crown. Team B delivered a solid showing, finishing 5th out of 26 competing schools.

Kyle Kuka and Team A officially earned qualification to represent the region at the National finals.


KSSSA National Chess Championships: Top 10 Finish

Moving on to the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Chess Championships held at MPESA Foundation Academy, Strathmore fielded a four-man national team comprising Justin Kamau (G.10), Baraka Wamai (F.3), Laris Miriti (F.3), and Michael Thiaka (F.3).

In a grueling 7-round Swiss system tournament:

  • The boys displayed remarkable resilience, building steady momentum after a slow start to defeat 5 opponent teams.
  • Strathmore secured 7th place nationally overall, while Kagumo High School from the Central Region claimed the national title.

FEASSA East Africa Games: Abel Taji Kimani Claims International Gold

The pinnacle of the chess season saw Abel Taji Kimani (Grade 10) fly the Kenyan flag high at the FEASSA East Africa Games in Morogoro, Tanzania.

  • Competing on Board 1—the premier board reserved for top-seeded players—Abel maintained absolute dominance from start to finish.
  • He achieved a perfect score, winning all 7 rounds against the finest young chess minds across East Africa.

Abel’s unwavering confidence, strategic vision, and composure under pressure earned Kenya valuable international points and brought immense honor to the entire Strathmore community.
